Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has announced that the Coalition Government is committed to tackling pornography and is considering the possibility of banning certain websites if deemed necessary.
During a parliamentary update on the National Taskforce to Address Pornography, Kamikamica highlighted the importance of international cooperation and the need to enhance legal frameworks to safeguard children from online sexual exploitation during the taskforce’s first meeting.
He discussed the current child protection laws and the necessity for more comprehensive policies to meet the evolving challenges posed by the digital environment.
Kamikamica then outlined the establishment of three working groups, each with distinct objectives aligned with the taskforce’s broader aims.
The first group will concentrate on policy, legislation, governance, and criminal justice, chaired by the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection. The second group, led by the Online Safety Commission, will focus on survivor support, empowerment, society, and culture. The third group will address industry and technology responses, chaired by the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji.
To enhance the effectiveness of their initiatives, he emphasized that the taskforce will implement strong mechanisms for monitoring and evaluation.
“We will set up feedback channels for the community to share their input, ensuring we remain responsive to the needs of our citizens,” Kamikamica stated.
The next meeting of the National Taskforce is scheduled for this month, where the working groups will present their findings and engage in further discussions regarding the issue of pornography in Fiji.
Kamikamica reassured that the government is serious about their intentions, even considering banning certain sites if necessary.
