The Fiji Police Force is set to proceed with the incineration of 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine, a significant operation prompted by a High Court order issued on December 13, 2024. This destruction will occur at the Dignified Crematorium in Nausori, with police officials aiming to complete the process within five days, although they are allowed up to seven days under the court’s directive.
Senior Superintendent of Police Kasiano Vusonilawe indicated that the operation has involved extensive preparations over several months. The drugs will be vaporized in a furnace using a globally recognized method acknowledged for its safety and effectiveness in handling hazardous substances.
This initiative goes beyond merely disposing of illicit drugs; it underscores the Fiji Police’s dedication to public safety and accountability. Legal representatives of individuals charged will be invited to observe the destruction, ensuring that the operation adheres to transparency principles. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mesake Waqa highlighted the collaborative nature of the effort, which involves several governmental ministries, including Justice, Health, and Environment, along with international law enforcement partners from Australia and New Zealand.
The seized methamphetamine, valued at nearly $2 billion, was obtained during significant drug raids in Nadi. Previous reports have pointed out the issues faced by authorities regarding large drug seizures and emphasized the impracticality of storing such quantities due to public safety threats.
In a move aimed at enhancing accountability, the police will release detailed information about the destruction process to the public after the operation is completed. This undertaking marks a hopeful advancement in Fiji’s fight against drug trafficking, as law enforcement agencies work tirelessly to remove dangerous substances from communities and improve safety for all citizens. The collaborative efforts showcased in this operation reflect a strong commitment to combating drug-related crime and reinforcing the resolve of authorities to create a safer environment.
