Fiji’s Bold Move: Hosting Regional Policing Excellence

Fiji is poised to become the official location for the regional policing centres of excellence under the Pacific Policing Initiative (PPI). These centres will provide training, support, research, best practices, and leadership in various areas of policing.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced this during his keynote speech at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 Pacific Policing Event held in Sagafili Village, Samoa last week. He emphasized that the establishment of these centres is integral to the Pacific Policing Initiative.

“I’m pleased that Fiji is prepared to serve as a host for one of these centres. We have the necessary facilities and infrastructure to back this regional initiative,” Mr. Rabuka stated.

The goal of the PPI is to harmonize policing frameworks throughout the Pacific, structured around three main pillars: Regional Centres of Excellence, a Deployable Pacific Police Support Group (PPSG), and a Coordination Hub in Brisbane.

Rabuka noted the potential for increased Australian support for the Black Rock training facility in Nadi, which serves not only as a military base but also as a centre for police training and disaster relief efforts.
