The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission has praised the Government for its decision to prohibit the use of Ferris wheels as a form of public entertainment. This move comes in response to a series of accidents in Fiji, which sadly resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries.
Pravesh Sharma, the chair of the Commission, emphasized the importance of prioritizing public safety among all stakeholders, including the Government, and insisted that entertainment providers must adhere to stringent standards of accountability. He highlighted that comprehensive investigations should be conducted and strong safety measures need to be instituted for all entertainment events across the nation.
“Public safety must remain paramount to ensure that such incidents are not repeated,” Sharma stressed. He also expressed solidarity with the victims and the families affected by the Ferris wheel-related incidents and urged relevant authorities to share the findings of investigations concerning the unfortunate death of a young woman earlier this year.
Sharma asserted that those accountable for the accident should face consequences, and it is vital that the affected families receive appropriate compensation.
This initiative reflects a growing commitment to safeguarding public welfare in Fiji and reinforces the idea that the government and regulatory bodies can work collaboratively to prevent future tragedies and uphold community trust. By focusing on accountability and safety, there is hope that such measures will lead to a safer recreational environment for all.
