The Fijian government is making strides towards establishing a medicinal cannabis industry exclusively for export, with the aim of aiding economic diversification, job creation, and enhancing its position in the burgeoning global market. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, provided insights in Parliament regarding the ongoing consultations and the feasibility study, emphasizing the considerable economic prospects this initiative presents.
Kamikamica articulated that the decision to pursue the medicinal cannabis industry arises from the chance to engage in the international demand for such products. The envisioned export-only model is intended to broaden Fiji’s economic framework and create novel revenue streams. He stated, “The global medicinal cannabis industry is rapidly growing, and Fiji has the potential to emerge as a significant player in this market.”
The initiative aligns with Fiji’s expanded economic strategy, which seeks to grow export revenues and develop sectors beyond traditional industries. Since the Cabinet’s approval in August 2023, a multi-agency task force comprising 12 government departments has been working collectively on this project. Recently, extensive consultations were held nationwide, gathering input from over 500 participants, and a significant 75% voiced support for the legalization of cannabis for medicinal purposes. This overwhelming agreement underscores community engagement and the recognition of the benefits this industry could bring.
Kamikamica highlighted the potential for empowering local communities, particularly in rural and maritime areas, thus boosting agricultural development and creating job opportunities in regions that require economic enhancement.
Despite some delays in the legislative process, there are plans to present the necessary bill by 2025. The government is committed to ensuring that the legislation is comprehensive and addresses potential challenges, including concerns about theft and the involvement of illicit markets. Kamikamica assured that stringent security measures, modeled after successful frameworks from other countries, will be implemented to secure production and maintain industry integrity.
