The Fijian government is advancing its initiative to establish a medicinal cannabis industry aimed exclusively at exports. This move is seen as a way to diversify the economy, create jobs, and position Fiji within the burgeoning global market for medicinal cannabis products.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, addressed Parliament regarding the consultations and feasibility studies being conducted. He emphasized the substantial economic potential of this industry and its role in expanding Fiji’s economic base while generating new revenue streams.
Mr. Kamikamica noted that the global medicinal cannabis market is rapidly growing and Fiji has the potential to be a significant contributor to that market. Since Cabinet approval in August 2023, a multi-agency task force has been established and has completed a series of consultations across the country with over 500 participants, revealing strong support—75 percent—among participants for legalizing medicinal cannabis.

Despite minor delays in the legislative review process, the government aims to present the relevant bill in 2025. He addressed concerns regarding potential theft and illicit market connections, stating that stringent security measures would be implemented, modeled after successful regulations in countries like Australia.
