The Fijian government is advancing its initiative to establish a medicinal cannabis industry aimed exclusively at exports. This move is seen as a way to diversify the economy, create jobs, and position Fiji within the burgeoning global market for medicinal cannabis products.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, addressed Parliament regarding the consultations and feasibility studies being conducted. He emphasized the substantial economic potential of this industry and its role in expanding Fiji’s economic base while generating new revenue streams.

Mr. Kamikamica noted that the global medicinal cannabis market is rapidly growing and Fiji has the potential to be a significant contributor to that market. The planned export-only industry aims to foster a dynamic ecosystem that could enhance agriculture, manufacturing, and research while simultaneously creating job opportunities.

The initiative aligns with Fiji’s broader economic strategy to increase export revenues and diversify sectors beyond traditional industries. Since Cabinet approval in August 2023, a multi-agency task force has been established and has completed a series of consultations across the country with over 500 participants, revealing strong support—75 percent—among participants for legalizing medicinal cannabis.

Mr. Kamikamica pointed out that this initiative not only focuses on cannabis itself but also on empowering local communities, particularly in rural and maritime regions, promoting agricultural development and job creation where it is most needed.

Despite minor delays in the legislative review process, the government aims to present the relevant bill in 2025. The Deputy Prime Minister assured that the legislation would be comprehensive and robust to ensure the industry’s success. He addressed concerns regarding potential theft and illicit market connections, stating that stringent security measures would be implemented, modeled after successful regulations in countries like Australia.

Once the legislation is finalized, the medicinal cannabis industry is expected to enhance exports, create new jobs, and foster medicinal research expertise, marking a significant advancement for Fiji’s economy and its engagement in global markets. Mr. Kamikamica reiterated the government’s commitment to ensure the industry ultimately generates a positive impact on the economy and community livelihoods through thorough consultations post-legislation.

In summary, the development of the medicinal cannabis industry in Fiji holds significant promise for economic growth, job creation, and empowerment of local communities, setting a hopeful tone for the nation’s future in a global industry. The government’s commitment to security and sustainability can mitigate concerns and lead to a thriving sector that benefits all Fijians.
