A new initiative in Fiji is set to significantly enhance high-speed internet connectivity for thousands of residents in Vanua Levu. The Fiber Optic Extension project, launched by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, aims to strengthen the nation’s telecommunication infrastructure, promoting economic growth and expanding access to essential services throughout the Northern Division.

During the launch event, Prime Minister Rabuka highlighted the crucial role of reliable communication in driving economic development, improving education, and boosting disaster resilience. He stated, “This project marks a significant milestone for both the people of Vanua Levu and for Telecom, as it reinforces high-speed, resilient, and scalable connectivity between Savusavu and Labasa.”

The Fiber Optic Extension is a key component of Telecom Fiji’s five-year investment plan, set at $5 million, to upgrade the country’s digital infrastructure. The undertaking will be rolled out in two distinct phases: the initial phase will connect Labasa to Seaqaqa, while the subsequent phase will extend services from Seaqaqa to Savusavu, linking to the Savusavu Cable Landing Station.

This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance Fiji’s digital capabilities, which have included the implementation of subsea cables and collaborations with organizations like Google and Kordia. Such advancements are essential in bridging the digital divide and ensuring that even remote communities can enjoy the myriad benefits of digital connectivity. Prime Minister Rabuka encouraged residents to utilize this new access in a responsible manner to build a prosperous future.

As Fiji’s digital infrastructure continues to evolve, this project symbolizes hope for expanded economic opportunities, improved healthcare and educational services, and increased resilience against natural disasters. The advancement signifies strides towards a more inclusive digital economy that can empower all Fijians in the larger, interconnected world.
