The Fijian government is prioritizing the enhancement of border controls in its proposed 2025-2026 National Budget, according to Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad. During a recent visit to Lautoka, Prasad outlined the allocation of approximately $40 million aimed at optimizing the operations of the Fiji Police Force, the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji, and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Services. This funding will facilitate the recruitment of 1,000 new police officers, significantly improving the police presence across the nation.

Prasad emphasized the hope that increased police visibility, coupled with collaboration from Australia and New Zealand, will bolster border security, contributing to the fight against crime and drugs. The funding includes a first-phase allocation of $19 million, intended to address both the drug crisis and rising crime rates, which have escalated by 26% recently.

In addition to law enforcement, the budget also includes essential health initiatives focused on improving access to healthcare. This includes provisions for kidney dialysis services and the procurement of medicines through a new agreement with India aimed at ensuring a better supply to counteract current shortages.

Prasad’s statement reflects a hopeful view towards addressing public safety and health services in Fiji, indicating a comprehensive strategy that intertwines law enforcement and community health with renewed funding and resources. By tackling these pressing challenges, the government aims to foster a safer environment for all Fijian citizens, which is a significant step towards securing the country’s future.

This budget not only addresses immediate security concerns but also lays a foundation for long-term improvements in health and safety for the Fijian people. The focus on collaboration and community engagement continues to reinforce the optimistic outlook for Fiji’s efforts in combating both crime and public health issues.
