Fiji’s Minister for Immigration, Viliame Naupoto, emphasized the importance of viewing refugees not as burdens but as individuals full of potential during his address at the 2025 Refugee Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue in Suva. He underscored Fiji’s commitment to compassion and fairness in its treatment of refugees, expressing that they should be recognized as integral members of society.

“We see them as mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters, reflecting our own families and hopes,” Naupoto stated, highlighting the contributions refugees can make when given the opportunity. He pointed out Fiji’s proactive measures, including granting work rights to asylum seekers, enabling them to live with dignity and reduce their dependence on limited aid.

The conversation around refugee advocacy in Fiji aligns with ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing the country’s immigration system. Just recently, the Ministry of Immigration has been urged to approach refugee protection principles with greater professionalism and sensitivity. Training workshops in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have been conducted to streamline Fiji’s refugee status determination processes and establish a National Refugee Policy.

These initiatives demonstrate a clear commitment from the Fijian government to effectively manage both asylum seekers and refugees while addressing critical issues such as human trafficking and irregular migration. The focus on comprehensive asylum systems reflects a broader strategy to create a structured, equitable environment for all migrants and refugees, ensuring their rights and welfare are upheld.

While Fiji faces challenges inherent to small economies in developing their asylum systems, the commitment to foster dialogue and collaboration among various sectors is crucial. This collective effort signifies a hopeful trajectory in addressing refugee and migrant issues, potentially enriching the Fijian community as a result. By nurturing an inclusive atmosphere, Fiji can continue to evolve as a beacon of compassion and stability in the Pacific region.
