The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has strengthened its focus on road safety by actively confronting reckless driving behavior. From January to December 9, 2024, the LTA canceled 62 driver licenses and suspended an additional 21.

LTA’s Chief Executive, Irimaia Rokosawa, reported that across various branches, 107 counseling sessions were conducted for those exhibiting irresponsible driving habits. These sessions resulted in 1,366 first warnings, 297 second warnings, and 155 final warnings being issued.

Rokosawa emphasized that these counseling initiatives are part of the LTA’s strategy to educate drivers about their responsibilities while discouraging unsafe driving practices. He also noted that 39 client IDs were temporarily frozen due to severe violations, with one case being referred for audit.

“Our measures demonstrate the LTA’s zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct. Ensuring road safety is our top priority,” Rokosawa stated, adding that the agency will not hesitate to take further action against drivers who disregard laws and jeopardize lives.

The LTA’s actions aim to go beyond simple punishment; they focus on the larger objective of saving lives and preventing accidents. By holding offenders accountable and removing dangerous drivers from the streets, they believe they can significantly reduce preventable traffic-related incidents.

“Every canceled or suspended license means one less potential danger on the road,” remarked Rokosawa. He stressed the importance of drivers understanding their immense responsibility towards themselves and others sharing the road.

Overall, this initiative by the LTA reflects a strong commitment to fostering a safer driving environment in Fiji, which is a hopeful step towards reducing traffic incidents and enhancing public safety.
