Fiji has taken a significant step toward improving the availability of medical supplies by establishing a direct procurement channel for medicines from India. This development follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India’s Minister for External Affairs & Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, and Fiji’s Assistant Minister for Health & Medical Services, Honourable Penioni Ravunawa.
Under this agreement, all medical products will go through the India Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), which sets minimum quality standards for medicines imported into India. This pathway is designed to ensure that the medications and medical supplies that Fiji imports are safe, effective, and of high quality.
Mr. Ravunawa expressed gratitude towards the Ministry of Health & Medical Services for facilitating this arrangement, emphasizing that it would enhance Fiji’s regulatory system for medicinal products. He noted that the MoU aligns with Fiji’s ongoing effort to strengthen its healthcare infrastructure and improve access to necessary medical supplies for Fijians.
This initiative is particularly timely, as the Fijian government has been actively seeking solutions to address ongoing medication shortages in its healthcare system. A recent interview with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka highlighted the government’s commitment to resolving these issues through collaborations with pharmaceutical suppliers, aiming to ensure that citizens have reliable access to critical medications.
The IPC standards will be recognized within Fiji’s regulatory framework, provided they meet or exceed existing national standards.
