Police in Fiji have made a significant effort to address drinking-related offenses, resulting in the arrest of 29 individuals across the country between August 1st and 4th. The Western Division reported the most arrests, with 20 individuals taken into custody—19 for consuming alcohol in public areas and one for being drunk and disorderly. The Northern Division followed with four arrests, including one person facing additional charges for serious assault.
In addition to the Western and Northern Divisions, the Southern Division recorded four arrests—two for public drinking and two for drunk and disorderly behavior. The Central Division accounted for two arrests, and the Eastern Division reported one individual apprehended for disorderly conduct related to alcohol consumption.
The Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Kasiano Vusonilawe, has encouraged community involvement in reporting public drinking violations. He urged residents to contact their local police stations or the National Police Command Center at 9905 296 to help maintain public order.
Similar recent police operations reflected a consistent commitment to enhancing community safety by addressing public drinking issues highlighted by community leaders in previous reports. For instance, Senior Superintendent Iakobo Vaisewa previously warned against public intoxication, stressing the need for a disciplined approach to alcohol consumption, particularly during festive seasons.
The ongoing crackdown underscores the importance of cooperation between law enforcement and the public in ensuring community safety. By promoting responsible alcohol consumption, there is hope for a safer environment, as police and community leaders continue to work together to tackle issues of substance abuse and public disorder. With proactive measures in place, the potential for positive change is within reach.
