Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, announced that the nation is advocating for the Pacific region to host COP31. This initiative aligns with Fiji’s support for Australia’s candidacy to host the conference. Prof Prasad expressed optimism about the outcome, stating that a Pacific-hosted COP would be highly beneficial.
He emphasized that although the final decision has yet to be made, he is hopeful that Australia and the Pacific will be selected to host COP31 following next year’s COP30 in Brazil. Highlighting the strategies and practices employed by Fiji during COP29, Prof Prasad noted that these efforts would serve as a foundational model for future delegations. He emphasized the importance of a comprehensive governmental approach, which involved various departments in making decisions and preparations.
The hope for the Pacific to host COP31 reflects a broader commitment to addressing climate issues, particularly in regions that are experiencing the direct impacts of climate change. Fiji’s involvement showcases the nation’s determination to lead in climate discussions and initiatives.
This advocacy strengthens the Pacific’s position in global environmental dialogues and fosters a sense of regional solidarity in combating climate challenges. Overall, the push for a Pacific COP is a positive step, promoting awareness and urgency around climate action in an area heavily affected by environmental changes. It underscores the potential for collaboration among Pacific nations in addressing urgent global issues.
