Fiji is intensifying its efforts to combat plastic pollution with the announcement of six new TrashBoom units set to be installed across the country. This innovative waste interception device has already demonstrated its effectiveness, recently capturing approximately 60 kilograms of waste, predominantly plastic bottles, from Nubukalou Creek in Suva.

The deployment of the TrashBoom is part of a broader initiative supported by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment. According to Permanent Secretary Sivendra Michael, 70% of the collected debris during the initial week was found to be from recyclable plastic bottles. While progress is being made in redirecting recyclable items to proper disposal stations, non-recyclables continue to accumulate in landfills, indicating the need for sustainable solutions.

An interim plan is in place, involving the anticipated pyrolysis plant being developed by Golden Manufacturers, which will facilitate the sustainable disposal of tires and hard-to-recycle plastics. Regular weekly audits conducted by the TrashBoom team help in identifying and sorting materials, showcasing the initiative’s efficiency in waste management.

The next TrashBoom will be positioned at Nakasi, an area noted for its litter challenges, marking further efforts to tackle pollution. The government is finalizing Container Deposit Regulations, which places management fees on single-use plastics, aligned with international plastic treaty commitments. This is a crucial step that aims to foster greater accountability in waste disposal practices.

Despite these advancements, Mr. Michael acknowledged that the momentum in tackling plastic pollution needs to increase. The ongoing regulatory changes and community engagement are vital components of this initiative, presenting hope for a more sustainable and environmentally conscious Fiji.

The TrashBoom initiative, along with the development of new regulations and community involvement, presents a comprehensive strategy towards significantly reducing plastic pollution in Fiji’s waterways. As these efforts gain traction, they underscore the importance of collaborative action and innovation in addressing environmental challenges.
