Fiji is taking significant steps to address the growing challenges posed by online pornography and child sexual abuse material, which have raised serious concerns regarding the safety of families, especially women and children. Recently, the National Taskforce Against Pornography (NTAP) convened a meeting aimed at exploring effective strategies to combat these digital threats.
The meeting was co-chaired by Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran and Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica, demonstrating a strong collaborative approach to tackling these critical issues. A pivotal discussion point was Fiji’s commitment to aligning with international efforts to prevent child exploitation, highlighted by a presentation from Naomi Trewinnard of the Lanzarote Convention Secretariat. This convention offers essential frameworks and resources aimed at enhancing child protection systems in Fiji.
Capacity building was another key focus during the session. U.S. Embassy Special Agent Jeremy Clark shared trends related to child exploitation from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), noting that the center has already trained 15 Fiji Police investigators on advanced case management techniques, thereby strengthening local law enforcement capabilities.
Regional cooperation was emphasized, with contributions from Acting Australian High Commissioner Clair McNamara. She outlined Australia’s strategies to combat online pornography and protect vulnerable populations throughout the Pacific region, stressing the importance of a coordinated response to technology-facilitated gender-based violence, a pressing issue in Pacific communities.
Local leaders, including Director Arieta Tagivetaua and CEO of the Telecommunication Authority of Fiji Prit Chand, shared updates on ongoing national initiatives, reinforcing the necessity for multi-sector collaboration to effectively respond to the challenges posed by online pornography.
The NTAP meeting underscored the critical need for immediate action against online exploitation and child abuse, marking a hopeful step towards fostering safer environments for all Fijians. With ongoing collaboration and commitment, there is potential for substantial progress in protecting vulnerable populations against these digital threats.
