Fiji’s police force is currently working alongside Tongan authorities as part of an investigation into the discovery of a firearm and approximately 600 rounds of ammunition aboard the MV Malau, which was intercepted in Suva Harbour. Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu confirmed that the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority (FRCS) has concluded its initial investigation and provided a report to law enforcement.

Details surrounding the intended recipient of these weapons, rumored to be a high chief, are being withheld as the investigation progresses. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged heightened vigilance among authorities, underlining the critical nature of national security following this incident that occurred on March 17, 2025.

The operation was executed by the Fiji naval ship RFNS Timo, which successfully intercepted the MV Malau, escorting it to Suva Harbour where the illegal items were confiscated. Rabuka commended the cooperative efforts of law enforcement agencies—including the Fiji Navy and FRCS—in effectively detecting and intercepting this shipment, which supports the safeguarding of Fiji’s borders.

This case is part of an increasing concern about arms trafficking within the region, with evidence suggesting a troubling connection between illegal arms and individuals of high social status. Fiji’s law enforcement agencies are clearly demonstrating a robust commitment to improving national security and enforcing firearm regulations.

The ongoing investigations highlight the importance of community involvement in reporting suspicious activities, reinforcing the government’s drive to create a safer environment for all citizens of Fiji. With these proactive measures in place, there is hope that they will effectively mitigate the risk of future incidents and strengthen the security of Fiji’s maritime environment.
