The “National Taskforce to Address Pornography” is committed to eliminating illegal child pornography on social media platforms. This pledge was emphasized by Prit Chand, the CEO of the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji, during a press conference held yesterday.
Chand highlighted the collaborative effort between the Telecommunications Authority and the Fiji Police Force to ensure a swift and effective response to this urgent issue. He noted that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have expressed their readiness to block specific websites that host child pornography. Meanwhile, the Fiji Police Force is actively gathering data on these illicit sites to aid in their efforts.
Manoa Kamikamica, the Minister for Trade, Cooperatives, and MSME, underscored the government’s significant role in these efforts. He reiterated that the government is preparing to take action by establishing the necessary legal framework to facilitate the removal of such harmful content. Kamikamica specifically mentioned Telegram as a concerning platform regarding this issue. He assured the public that while discussions are ongoing, tangible actions will soon follow.
As this initiative develops, it offers hope for safeguarding children and diminishing the spread of harmful materials online. The proactive stance taken by both the Telecommunications Authority and the government demonstrates a commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and enhancing online safety in Fiji.
