In Fiji, a troubling statistic reveals that five out of six children have faced some form of violence, underscoring an urgent need for intervention in child protection. The Fiji Police Force reports an average of five cases of child sexual abuse weekly, prompting the Ministry for Women and Children, led by Minister Sashi Kiran, to respond decisively to this crisis.
To combat this alarming trend, the Ministry is formulating a National Action Plan aimed at preventing child abuse. This plan will support the implementation of the Child Protection and Child Justice Acts, which are expected to come into effect in 2024. Minister Kiran has highlighted the importance of not only preventing further abuse but also offering care and support to those who have already been victimized.
In partnership with UNICEF, a comprehensive training program has been established to enhance local counselors’ abilities in supporting child victims dealing with emotional and psychological challenges. This initiative employs innovative therapeutic techniques, incorporating sports, music, and art to facilitate healing for children of all ages.
Currently, there is a network of 20 trained child therapists available to provide essential support for parents and children affected by abuse. The Ministry has made these resources accessible, emphasizing a proactive approach to create a robust network of professionals equipped to deliver effective psychosocial support, thus strengthening the community’s capacity to aid its most vulnerable members.
