Fiji’s Bold Move: A New Era for National Security and Defense

The Fiji National Security and Defence Review (NSDR) aims to provide a strategic framework for addressing the complex challenges that jeopardize Fiji’s sovereignty and stability. During the NSDR launch at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Pio Tikoduadua emphasized the evolving security landscape, which includes threats like cyber attacks, climate change, transnational crime, and geopolitical issues.

Tikoduadua highlighted the necessity for Fiji to adopt an adaptive and proactive stance in dealing with these challenges. A significant component of the NSDR is the advocacy for a collaborative approach to security that involves both governmental and societal participation. He reiterated that while the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Police Force are crucial in maintaining security, their efforts should be complemented by the involvement of other government entities, civil organizations, and the private sector.

He stated, “National security is not the responsibility of a single entity—it is a shared responsibility that touches all of us.”

The Editorial Board contributing their insights to the NSDR includes Professor Satish Chand as Chair, Associate Professor Shailendra Singh, Assistant Professor Ana Rokomokoti, and NSDR Independent lead Jim Sanday. Community consultations will be conducted to gather essential data from both government and civil society for the review.
