Fiji has officially launched its Early Childhood Development (ECD) Policy for the years 2024-2028, which is dedicated to ensuring that all children receive essential care, proper nutrition, and early learning opportunities while safeguarding them from abuse and neglect. This policy underscores the global significance of ECD in fostering lifelong learning, health, and overall well-being.

Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica, during the policy launch, highlighted Fiji’s role as a leader in the Pacific Regional Council for ECD. He stressed the necessity for innovative strategies to address challenges posed by climate change and limited resources. Kamikamica emphasized that investing in early childhood education is not just morally imperative but also a wise economic strategy that yields positive outcomes for both children and society as a whole. He called on parents and communities to actively engage in the development of their children and urged for a collective effort to ensure that every child in Fiji can thrive.

UNICEF Pacific Representative Roshni Basu spoke about the critical nature of early childhood experiences in shaping a child’s future. She noted that the ECD Policy marks a significant step forward for Fiji and the broader Pacific region, aiming to enhance healthcare, nutrition, protection, and learning opportunities for young children. Basu pointed out the hurdles faced by disadvantaged children in Fiji, cautioning that missed opportunities in early development can lead to long-lasting adverse effects. She advocated for collaboration to build on the progress made in ECD despite the challenges that remain.

Additionally, New Zealand High Commissioner to Fiji, Charlotte Darlow, expressed appreciation for Fiji’s focus on prioritizing the well-being of its youngest citizens, recognizing them as the future leaders of the nation. The involvement of UNICEF, the Ministry of Health, and the New Zealand Government is crucial in the establishment of this ECD policy for Fiji.

In summary, the launch of Fiji’s ECD Policy is a promising initiative that not only prioritizes the health and education of young children but also aims to create a supportive environment that encourages community involvement and addresses broader socio-economic challenges. It is an encouraging step towards building a brighter future for the younger generation in Fiji.
