A new career centre is set to be established in Fiji as a response to the country’s urgent labour shortage. This initiative, spearheaded by Natural Waters of Viti Pte Limited, the company behind FIJI Water, aims to replicate a successful model from California, as shared by Marigold Moody, the assistant general counsel for the South Pacific.
During her address at the Top Executives Conference 2024 (TO PEX2024) at Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Denarau, Ms. Moody emphasized that this project is a significant investment in Fiji’s workforce. “This proposed Career Centre will focus on skills development, which is crucial for our businesses in Fiji,” she stated.
With around 11 vessels currently operating in the Pacific, there is a pressing need for skilled seafarers, a gap that this career centre hopes to fill. FIJI Water has already committed over FJ$140 million to enhance its operational capacity by 47%. Over the next decade, increasing this capacity will require a larger workforce.
In collaboration with Fiji National University, the plan is to launch the career centre in Suva, aiming for completion in 2025. Ms. Moody noted that the approach will focus on ensuring job readiness, highlighting the existing disparity in training versus job market needs. The program will involve education specialists who will develop curricula tailored to meet the skills required by local employers.
Furthermore, the initiative will not only aim to prepare individuals for jobs but also plans to invite participation from other manufacturing and marine industry stakeholders through an industry council. This collaborative effort may foster greater employment opportunities and economic growth in the region.
In summary, the establishment of the career centre reflects a proactive approach to tackling skills shortages in Fiji and emphasizes the importance of aligning education with industry needs. The initiative holds the promise of enhancing job readiness and creating a brighter future for the workforce in the Pacific.
