The Fiji Police Force has concluded the successful destruction of 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine, a drug valued at around $2 billion, in a controlled vaporization process at the Dignified Crematorium. This significant operation, dubbed Operation White Wave, began on February 24 and followed a High Court decree issued on December 13, 2024. Vigilant monitoring characterized the entire process, ensuring transparency and accountability with involvement from various government bodies and international partners.
Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the team, particularly noting the leadership of Director Forensics Superintendent of Police, Margret Marshall. Following the destruction, which was completed on Friday at 4 PM, Marshall confirmed that all remnants from the incineration tested negative for the illicit substance.
Dr. Sivendra Michael, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, stressed the collaboration between the ministry and police to uphold environmental standards during the operation. Local residents had raised concerns regarding potential health risks from smoke emissions, but authorities affirmed that the procedures adhered to the highest practices and international guidelines for hazardous waste disposal.
The operation showcased a substantial collaborative effort among various ministries, including Justice, Health, and Environment, along with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, international law enforcement such as the Australian Federal Police and New Zealand Police, and local entities like the Nausori Town Council. This cooperation highlights a coordinated national strategy to combat the challenges of drug trafficking and emphasizes a collective commitment to enhancing community safety.
This event marks a pivotal moment in Fiji’s fight against drug trafficking, symbolizing hope for improved public health and safety. The decisive actions taken by authorities to eliminate vast quantities of dangerous drugs demonstrate a strong commitment to safeguarding communities and fostering the overall well-being of the population.
The operation’s transparency, which allowed representatives of the defendants to observe the process, serves to bolster public trust in the judicial and law enforcement systems. As Fiji advances in tackling pressing public health issues, the collaborative approach displayed during this initiative provides a promising outlook for ongoing efforts against drug-related crimes.
