The Fiji Police Force is set to destroy 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine today, February 24, 2025, at the Dignified Crematorium, in compliance with a High Court order issued on December 13, 2024. This significant operation reflects the ongoing efforts in Fiji to combat drug trafficking and ensure public safety.
The disposal process will utilize vaporization in a furnace, a method recognized globally as an effective way to eliminate hazardous drugs. Extensive consultations with stakeholders and the appropriate authorities have been conducted to ensure that the destruction aligns with best practices while addressing health and environmental concerns.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Crime, Mesake Waqa, emphasized the commitment to transparency in this operation. Legal representatives for the defendants involved in the case will be permitted to observe the destruction, provided it adheres to security protocols. Following the execution of the destruction process, detailed reports will be made public, ensuring accountability.
Key stakeholders in this operation include various ministries such as Justice, Policing, Health, and Environment, alongside the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, and international law enforcement agencies from Australia and New Zealand. The collaboration showcases a united effort to tackle drug-related issues and highlights the importance of community safety.
This action not only targets the removal of dangerous drugs from circulation but also serves as a hopeful indication of progress in Fiji’s battle against illicit substances. By addressing the underlying issues associated with drug trafficking, authorities aim to foster a safer environment for all citizens.
