The Fiji Police Force is concluding the destruction of 4.1 tonnes of methamphetamine today, an operation conducted under strict security at the Dignified Crematorium in compliance with a High Court order issued on December 13, 2024. This effort is part of Fiji’s ongoing fight against drug trafficking and highlights the commitment of law enforcement and the judiciary to ensure public safety.
The drugs will be vaporized, a method recognized worldwide for its efficiency and safety in disposing of harmful substances. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Crime, Mesake Waqa, has stated that extensive consultations with various stakeholders, including military forces and international law enforcement agencies from Australia and New Zealand, have informed the destruction process to meet health and environmental standards.
To maintain transparency, legal representatives for the defendants involved will be permitted to observe the destruction under stringent security protocols, ensuring accountability throughout the operation. Comprehensive details about the disposal process will be made available to the public post-operation.
This significant operation marks a crucial step in eliminating dangerous drugs from circulation and embodies the collaborative efforts of multiple agencies in tackling drug-related crime in Fiji. The attention to transparency and engagement with community stakeholders fosters hope for a safer future, signaling progress in the ongoing efforts to combat the drug crisis. Public safety remains at the forefront as authorities work diligently to promote health and well-being in the community.
