The Fijian government has approved the relocation of 23 families from the Veidogo Settlement in Vatuwaqa to the Makosoi Development Estate in Deuba, as announced by the Cabinet. This move comes under a Memorandum of Agreement involving the Ministry of Housing, the Housing Authority, and Habitat for Humanity Fiji.
The Veidogo Settlement, covering an area of 4.5297 hectares, was surveyed earlier this year to assess the household situation within the settlement. This survey, conducted in April 2024, aimed to identify families who had received eviction notices. Consequently, the relocation plan was formulated to provide secure housing options for those affected.
In addition to relocating these families, the government is actively exploring further options for relocating any remaining families in the settlement. This decision reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to addressing housing instability and improving living conditions for vulnerable communities across Fiji.
These initiatives are part of a broader strategy aimed at managing housing needs for numerous households facing eviction from informal settlements. Similar measures have also been observed in other regions, where families are being moved to more secure living arrangements as part of a concerted effort to enhance urban housing standards.
Overall, this relocation initiative not only addresses immediate housing challenges but also aims to foster long-term security and stability for the affected families, paving the way for a more hopeful future.
