Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka emphasized the Government’s commitment to developing Vanua Levu, acknowledging its significant potential and unique appeal. During the official launch of the Damodar City Labasa Hotel Brand, Gavoka announced that the Government, in collaboration with the World Bank, is earmarking $200 million for the North as part of the Vanua Levu Tourism Development Programme.
He detailed that $61.5 million of this investment will be directed toward addressing growth barriers such as transport, infrastructure, and essential services, alongside enhancing private sector support. The Deputy Prime Minister assured that the Government will continue to endorse projects that align with its wider objectives, promoting growth that is sustainable, inclusive, and advantageous for all stakeholders involved.
Gavoka also highlighted the importance of tourism to Fiji’s economy, particularly within the services sector, stressing the need to significantly increase the current three percent contribution from this industry.
