The Local Government Ministry in Fiji is taking decisive steps to prioritize the relocation and resettlement of more than 1,000 households facing eviction from various informal settlements, including those in Veidogo in Vatuwaqa, Naidiri in Tacirua, and the Fiji Muslim League Settlement in Nabua. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Minister Maciu Nalumisa announced the formation of a comprehensive five-year relocation and resettlement policy designed to offer a structured pathway for those at risk.
This initiative is set to address the immediate needs of 1,062 households that have received eviction notices within the current financial year. To ensure the effectiveness of this plan, the Ministry is working closely with several government bodies, such as the i-Taukei Land Trust Board and the Ministry of Land. Minister Nalumisa highlighted the necessity of collaboration in developing efficient relocation strategies that comply with international human rights standards, particularly concerning the right to adequate housing and active participation of communities in decision-making processes.
Furthermore, a review of the Informal Settlement Act 2021-2022 has been approved by the cabinet, which aims to clarify the relocation processes and strengthen the support provided to vulnerable groups. This includes assistance with transportation and the identification of appropriate relocation sites, especially where designated areas do not currently exist.
This initiative not only showcases the government’s commitment to addressing the immediate housing challenges faced by families on the brink of eviction but also serves as a beacon of hope for an improved housing policy that prioritizes community welfare and stability.
