The FIJI Water Flying Fijians have announced a significant overhaul of their starting lineup, making eleven changes as they prepare to face Spain on their Europe Tour this weekend. Only four players – prop Eroni Mawi, fly-half Caleb Muntz, captain Waisea Nayacalevu, and winger Jiuta Wainiqolo – have kept their positions following their recent victory against Wales, where they triumphed 24-19 in Cardiff.
Head Coach Mick Byrne explained that several injuries have prompted the need for player rotations and rest in anticipation of a competitive match against the Spanish team. The squad will feature a fresh front row with Sam Matavesi and Luke Tagi, along with a new locking duo, Mesake Vocevoce and Ratu Leone Ratuisolia.
Making his Test debut, Saimoni Uluinakauvadra takes on the openside flanker role, complemented by Vilive Miramira at blindside and Albert Tuisue at number eight. Simi Kuruvoli will take charge as scrum-half, partnering with Muntz. Nayacalevu shifts to inside centre, while Sireli Maqala will occupy the outside centre position. Newcomer Ponipate Loganimasi has been placed on the blindside wing alongside Wainiqolo, with Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula stepping in at fullback.
The bench includes players who are expected to provide crucial support during the match, including Mesulame Dolokoto, Haereiti Hetet, Jone Koroiduadua, Temo Mayanavanua, Elia Canakaivata, Peni Matawalu, Vilimoni Botitu, and Inia Tabuavou.
Fiji’s match against Spain is set for Estadio Jose Zorrilla on Sunday at 2 AM, promising to be an exciting encounter for both teams.
Summary: The Flying Fijians have made considerable changes to their lineup ahead of their match against Spain due to injuries, retaining only four starters from their previous game against Wales. The team’s strategy aims to balance rest and performance, with a debut player and fresh faces in key positions.
This adaptability and willingness to reshuffle the team demonstrate the depth of talent within Fijian rugby, showcasing their commitment to maintaining competitive momentum throughout the tour. As they face Spain, fans can look forward to an exciting display of skill and teamwork from the Flying Fijians.
