Fiji is preparing to officially launch its National Security Strategy (NSS) for the years 2025-2029, signaling a pivotal shift in the country’s approach to security. This comprehensive strategy aims to reshape national security priorities and enhance democratic oversight across government actions. Defense Minister Pio Tikoduadua emphasized that the NSS will establish crucial security objectives, identify potential threats, and guide decision-making on policy and resources.
Tikoduadua pointed out that the NSS serves as the cornerstone of Fiji’s national security framework and will coexist with the National Development Plan and the Foreign Policy White Paper. This triad of guiding documents delineates government priorities and strategies pertaining to development, foreign relations, and security.
A key feature of the NSS is its focus on improving coordination among diverse agencies and bolstering civil-military relations, while clearly defining the roles within the security sector. By fostering collaboration across all sectors of society and with international partners, the strategy aims to reinforce Fiji’s resilience against both traditional and emerging threats, such as transnational crime, human trafficking, cyber attacks, and environmental challenges.
In tandem with the recent National Security and Defence Review (NSDR), the NSS reflects a commitment to a proactive rather than reactive stance in national defense, embodying a “whole-of-government” approach. This integrated strategy links military, law enforcement, and civilian efforts to promote a unified vision for national resilience and security.
The optimism surrounding the NSS is palpable, with hopes that its implementation will not only address immediate security challenges but also contribute to long-term stability and trust in national security institutions. As Fiji moves forward with these strategic initiatives, the collective effort underscores the belief that security is a shared responsibility requiring participation from all sectors of society, heralding a safer and more equitable environment for all Fijians.
