Fiji’s Bold Leap Towards 90% Renewable Energy by 2035!

Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) has set an ambitious goal to achieve at least 90 percent of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2035, aiming to provide clean and affordable energy solutions. To reach this target, Acting Chief Executive Bobby Naimawi announced that EFL is in the process of identifying and developing various sustainable, economically viable projects.

One of the key initiatives currently under consideration is the Namosi Hydro-electric scheme, for which EFL is conducting a feasibility study. Preliminary investigations have indicated potential for multiple small hydro-electric facilities in the Namosi region, and EFL plans to build on these earlier findings.

Naimawi explained that the outcome of the feasibility study will guide EFL’s future actions. This study is evaluating three potential hydro-power sites in Namosi, alongside the necessary high-voltage infrastructure to connect these sites to major electricity demand areas.

The feasibility study will examine the technical feasibility, commercial viability, and the environmental and social implications of the proposed hydro-power facilities and the associated power evacuation infrastructure. Commencing in 2024, the study is expected to be completed within two years and is divided into two phases:

Phase 1 will involve scoping and options analysis to explore various project scenarios, while Phase 2 will focus on a selected range of project options for detailed technical, environmental, and social evaluation.

The assessment under this study will adhere to international standards, ensuring that it considers the impacts of the hydro-power scheme, including its social and economic benefits. Importantly, Naimawi emphasized that the study aims to prevent any inundation of populated or culturally sensitive regions and will not result in the relocation of any communities.

The feasibility study is being conducted by consultants, backed by development partners, who are collaborating closely with key stakeholders to engage those potentially affected before moving forward with any projects. Naimawi noted that the findings from this study will be crucial in shaping Fiji’s renewable energy roadmap as outlined in the National Development Plan.
