Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) has set a goal to provide clean and affordable energy, aiming for at least 90 percent of its energy needs to come from renewable sources by 2035. To reach this objective, Acting EFL Chief Executive Bobby Naimawi announced that the company is identifying and developing various sustainable and economically viable projects.

One of the key initiatives currently under evaluation is the Namosi Hydro-electric scheme project, for which EFL is conducting a feasibility study. Previous investigations indicate that multiple small hydro-electric schemes could be established in the Namosi region, and EFL is building on this prior research.

Naimawi mentioned that the company will review the findings of the feasibility study to determine the next steps. The study focuses on three potential hydro-power sites in Namosi, alongside the necessary high-voltage infrastructure required for transmitting electricity to larger consumption areas.

The feasibility study, which began in 2024, is anticipated to take up to two years and will be executed in two phases. Phase 1 will involve a scoping and options analysis, exploring various project scenarios. Phase 2 will narrow down to a selected list of project options, involving detailed technical, environmental, and social assessments.

Under this feasibility study, the potential impacts of the hydro-power project will be evaluated in accordance with international standards and best practices, ensuring that social and economic benefits are considered. Naimawi emphasized that the study aims to avoid any projects that would inundate populated or culturally significant areas, ensuring no existing settlements or villages are displaced by future hydro-power developments.

Consultants, funded by development partners, will conduct the feasibility study while closely collaborating with key stakeholders and consulting those who may be affected by the proposed projects. According to Naimawi, the findings of the feasibility study will play a crucial role in shaping Fiji’s renewable energy roadmap as outlined in the National Development Plan.
