Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has affirmed the Fijian government’s dedication to ensuring access to affordable and clean electricity for all citizens. In a significant move towards sustainable energy solutions, the government is exploring the incorporation of Micro Modular Reactors (MMRs) into Stern Landing Vessels, specifically the “Ocean of Peace.”
Developed by Lloyds Register, Deployable Energy, and Seatransport, MMRs represent a promising alternative to diesel engines, offering a cost-effective and emission-free power source capable of operating without refueling for periods of up to ten years. This innovative approach is expected to not only lower electricity costs but also enhance emergency power supply and reliability in local communities.
Rabuka highlighted the economic challenges posed by Fiji’s dependency on diesel fuel imports for power generation. He expressed confidence that integrating MMRs with other renewable energy sources will help reduce costs and carbon emissions, aligning with Fiji’s long-term energy goals.
This announcement follows a recent initiative endorsed by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), which praised the shipment of green hydrogen from New Zealand to Fiji, alongside the launch of a hydrogen dual-fuel generator at the Fiji Gas Lautoka Terminal. This dual-fuel technology, supported by international partnerships, aims to boost energy security and further reduce reliance on fossil fuels, paving the way towards a cleaner and greener future for the entire Pacific region.
