Fiji’s Bold Leap to 90% Renewable Energy by 2035: What’s Next?

Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) aims to provide clean and affordable energy solutions by ensuring at least 90 percent of its energy comes from renewable sources by the year 2035. To reach this goal, Acting Chief Executive Bobby Naimawi stated that EFL is focusing on identifying and developing multiple sustainable and economically viable projects.

One of the key projects under consideration is the Namosi Hydro-electric scheme, which is currently undergoing a feasibility study conducted by EFL. Preliminary investigations indicate that several small hydro-electric schemes could be developed in the Namosi region, and EFL is building upon these earlier assessments.

Naimawi mentioned that the next steps would depend on the viability of the feasibility results. The study will examine three potential hydro-power sites in Namosi, along with the necessary infrastructure to transport power from Namosi to larger electricity demand centers.

The feasibility study is designed to evaluate the technical feasibility, commercial viability, and the environmental and social impacts of potential hydro-power facilities and their associated infrastructure. Commencing in 2024 and expected to last up to two years, the study will be conducted in two phases:

Phase 1 will involve a scoping and options analysis, evaluating various project scenarios and arrangements. Phase 2 will focus on a selected shortlist of project options, conducting comprehensive technical, environmental, and social studies.

The feasibility study will also assess the potential impacts of the hydro-power scheme in accordance with international standards, including the evaluation of social and economic benefits. Naimawi emphasized the importance of ensuring that the study prevents any inundation of populated or culturally significant areas, as well as guaranteeing that no existing settlements or villages will need to be relocated due to the hydro-power developments.

This investigation is being performed by consultants funded by development partners, who are collaborating closely with key stakeholders to engage with communities that may be affected prior to the implementation of such projects.

The results of the feasibility study will play a crucial role in shaping Fiji’s renewable energy roadmap, as outlined in the National Development Plan.
