Fiji is on the verge of a significant upgrade in its telecommunications landscape as the government plans to establish the 4G network as the new minimum internet standard across the nation. Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica announced this initiative while providing key updates on the forthcoming 5G rollout, which aims to ensure that no community is left behind in the digital economy.

Displaying a commitment to enhancing connectivity, particularly in rural and maritime areas, Kamikamica noted that many communities currently rely on basic 2G or 3G services. The government’s plan includes a 5G Network Security Policy, which mandates comprehensive security measures to protect the network integrity, implementing vendor risk management and a zero-trust architecture to mitigate potential threats.

Kamikamica elaborated on the structured approach to the 5G rollout, which will occur in three phases. The first phase, set for 2025 to 2026, focuses on major urban centers and tourism hubs including Suva and Nadi. The subsequent phase will expand coverage to more communities, promoting equitable growth throughout the archipelago. By 2028, even more remote areas will gain access to this advanced connectivity.

Reflecting on the positive trajectory of Fiji’s digital future, Kamikamica emphasized the initiative’s potential to enhance the resilience and sovereignty of Fiji’s digital landscape. This is particularly encouraging as it aligns with previous discussions about bridging the digital divide through partnerships with technology innovators such as Starlink, which aims to provide reliable internet access to underserved regions, further promoting inclusivity.

This move towards modernizing telecommunications not only underscores the importance of connecting underserved communities but also signals a broader vision of empowerment and socio-economic growth for the nation. As Fiji embarks on this digital journey, it fosters optimism for a future where every Fijian can benefit from technological advancements and engage fully in the global economy.
