Fiji is taking significant steps to bolster its economy through the launch of the National E-Commerce Strategy 2025-2029. Announced in Suva by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, this initiative aims to integrate Fiji into the booming global e-commerce sector, which is projected to reach an impressive $4.32 trillion by 2025.

Permanent Secretary for Trade, Shaheen Ali, stressed the importance of adapting to the digital transformation, highlighting the strategic focus on empowering Fijian entrepreneurs from all walks of life—ranging from rural farmers to urban tech innovators. “We must embrace, adapt, and lead in this new digital era,” he said, emphasizing the need to provide access to global markets through digital trade opportunities.

The National E-Commerce Strategy is the result of extensive consultations since 2019, involving various stakeholders such as businesses, development partners, and civil society. It sets out a comprehensive roadmap built around four key pillars: strengthening policy and governance, enhancing trust in e-commerce, positioning e-commerce as a driver for trade, and empowering entrepreneurs, particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Kamikamica portrayed a forward-looking vision that extends beyond just online shopping, aiming for broader economic resilience and empowerment, which will equip Fijians with the necessary tools to thrive in the digital economy.

Despite these advancements, challenges remain, particularly regarding access to affordable digital payment options and logistics support. The government is aware of these obstacles and intends to collaborate with financial institutions and logistics providers to streamline processes, enhancing the reliability of e-commerce transactions.

The initiative aims to establish a robust supporting network that tackles these challenges head-on, with an emphasis on improving digital literacy and fostering effective collaboration among different sectors. As Fiji invests in its digital infrastructure, the initiative is viewed as a pathway toward increased participation in the global e-commerce marketplace, encouraging innovation and creating economic opportunities for all citizens.
