Fiji is making significant strides in enhancing its economy through digital commerce with the introduction of the National E-Commerce Strategy 2025-2029. Launched in Suva by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, this initiative aims to integrate Fiji into the rapidly expanding global e-commerce market, projected to reach $4.32 trillion by 2025.

Permanent Secretary for Trade, Shaheen Ali, highlighted the urgency for Fiji to adapt to this digital evolution, emphasizing the strategy’s focus on empowering Fijian entrepreneurs across all sectors, whether they are farmers in rural areas or tech innovators in urban centers. He stated, “We must embrace, adapt, and lead in this new digital era,” to facilitate access to global markets through digital trade.

This strategy, recognized as a bold step towards economic empowerment, is the product of extensive consultations since 2019, reflecting the collective input of businesses, development partners, and civil society. The initiative will promote policy frameworks that bolster digital commerce and establish a conducive environment for local businesses to thrive, creating a roadmap built on four key pillars: strengthening policy and governance, enhancing trust in e-commerce, positioning e-commerce as a trade driver, and empowering entrepreneurs and MSMEs.

Kamikamica’s launch remarks indicated a vision where the strategy is not merely about online shopping but encompasses broader economic resilience and empowerment, providing the necessary tools for all Fijians to succeed in this digital economy.

However, challenges still persist, particularly regarding access to affordable digital payment options and logistics support. The government acknowledges these hurdles and aims to collaborate with financial institutions and logistics providers to streamline processes and enhance reliability in e-commerce transactions.

The goal is to create a robust supporting network that addresses such issues, emphasizing the importance of digital literacy and effective partnerships among various stakeholders. As Fiji invests in improving its digital infrastructure, the initiative is seen as a pathway towards greater participation in the global e-commerce landscape, fostering innovation and providing economic opportunities for all Fijians.

Overall, Fiji’s National E-Commerce Strategy marks an optimistic step towards a vibrant and inclusive digital future, positioning the nation as a potential leader in the Pacific digital trade arena. With ongoing support and commitment from the government and its partners, there is hope for a flourishing e-commerce environment that benefits the entire population.
