Fiji is taking a significant step towards enhancing its economy through digital commerce with the recent introduction of the National E-commerce Strategy, unveiled in Suva by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica. This initiative is designed to ensure that locally-produced goods and digital services from Fiji can reach global markets more swiftly and effectively.
Kamikamica highlighted that the strategy extends beyond mere online shopping and digital transactions. He remarked, “It’s about economic empowerment, resilience, and unlocking new opportunities for every Fijian.” The strategy aims to assist not only urban technology entrepreneurs but also farmers from the highlands and artisans from remote islands, ensuring that all segments of society can flourish in a more digital economy.
The Deputy Prime Minister noted the urgency of adapting to digital commerce in today’s rapidly evolving landscape, stating that this strategy is part of a broader National Digital Strategy currently under development. This overarching plan will provide the infrastructure, policies, and skills necessary for Fiji to fully leverage the advantages of a digital economy.
Permanent Secretary for Trade, Shaheen Ali, conveyed that this launch is a result of extensive collaborative efforts dating back to 2019, aimed at improving Fiji’s standing within the global trading system. Moving forward, the focus will shift to implementing the strategy’s key components in collaboration with the National E-commerce Committee, which will monitor Fiji’s advancements against established performance metrics.
Fiji’s initiative mirrors a global trend where many governments are now acknowledging the significance of digital avenues for economic advancement. With a determination to expand necessary infrastructure and foster effective inter-sectoral partnerships, Fiji is poised to establish itself as a leading digital trade hub in the region.
This strategic move holds great promise for economic empowerment, showcasing the resilience and creativity inherent in the Fijian population. With ongoing investments in digital literacy and infrastructure enhancements, the future looks bright as Fiji embarks on its digital journey, paving the way for improved opportunities for all citizens.
