The Fiji Police Force has made a significant breakthrough in its efforts to combat drug trafficking by seizing 4.9 tonnes of marijuana and over $70,000 in suspected drug proceeds, including cash and building materials, as part of their ongoing operation, known as Operation Sasamaki. Launched on March 1, this initiative has revealed alarming insights into the scale of the drug crisis, which Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu described as “a matter of life and death.”

During a recent media briefing, Commissioner Tudravu highlighted that a substantial portion of the marijuana was confiscated in Kadavu, accounting for 3.5 tonnes, with additional seizures from cultivation sites in areas like Keasi, Rakiraki, Levuka, Lami, and Tavua. The crackdown resulted in over 100 arrests, with 96 individuals formally charged and brought to court.

While the prevalence of methamphetamine remains relatively low, authorities recognize it as a rising concern, signaling ongoing production in local areas despite no clandestine labs being discovered thus far. Commissioner Tudravu underscored the significance of targeting entire drug networks, from growers to buyers, and warned of the generational consequences of the current situation if not addressed promptly.

Community involvement is crucial in this fight, according to Tudravu, who urged the public to provide any relevant information to assist law enforcement efforts. His messages of gratitude towards community groups and informants reflect a broader strategy emphasizing cooperation between law enforcement and citizens in creating a safer Fiji.

This crackdown builds upon earlier results highlighted in past operations under Sasamaki, which previously reported significant seizures and arrests. With continued efforts, there is hope for a future where drug-related crime is significantly reduced, fostering a more secure environment for all citizens.

This collective initiative of the police force and community cooperation ignites optimism for progress against drug cultivation, reinforcing the importance of a united front in dealing with these pressing issues. The ongoing resolve of the Fiji Police to dismantle illegal drug networks showcases their commitment to ensuring safety and health for future generations.
