Fiji is grappling with an increasing wave of cyber threats as the country transitions to a more digital economy, a point emphasized by Deputy Prime Minister and Communications Minister Manoa Kamikamica during the TrendMicro World Tour 2025. Kamikamica remarked that the scope and complexity of cyber attacks in the region are escalating, with traditional threats now increasingly utilizing new technologies.

In response to these challenges, the Fijian government is finalizing its inaugural National Cyber Security Strategy, aimed at cultivating a safe and resilient digital environment. This strategy is anchored on the Cybersecurity Maturity Model for Nations and will provide a structured framework for addressing cyber risks on a national level.

A crucial aspect of this initiative is the operationalization of Fiji’s National Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), which will spearhead responses to significant cyber incidents. Kamikamica emphasized that this team will not only improve Fiji’s capability to tackle cyber threats but will also bolster coordination among various agencies, which historically have operated independently.

These developments converge with earlier efforts highlighted by Kamikamica regarding Fiji’s collaboration with Australia, which has been a key partner in strengthening Fiji’s cybersecurity initiatives. The establishment of a CERT and the ratification of international contracts, such as the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime, reflect Fiji’s commitment to enhancing its cybersecurity landscape while ensuring a proactive stance against evolving digital threats.

Overall, Fiji’s strategic moves indicate an optimistic trajectory towards a more secure digital future. By reinforcing cybersecurity frameworks and fostering collaboration both domestically and with international partners, Fiji is not only protecting its internal digital systems but also positioning itself as a beacon of cybersecurity leadership within the Pacific region. This cooperative approach aims to inspire neighboring nations to collaborate in creating a safer digital space for all.
