The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji is taking significant strides to enhance road safety through robust actions against reckless driving. As of December 9, 2024, the LTA has canceled 62 driver licenses and suspended an additional 21 licenses in its efforts to promote safe driving practices.
Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa highlighted the Authority’s proactive approach, noting that 107 counseling sessions were conducted across various LTA branches for those engaged in irresponsible driving behaviors. During these sessions, a total of 1,366 first warnings, 297 second warnings, and 155 final warnings were issued to participants.
Rokosawa emphasized that these counseling efforts aim to educate drivers on their responsibilities and deter unsafe driving. In addition, he noted that 39 client IDs were suspended due to serious violations, while one case has been referred for an audit.
“We have a zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct in our system. Our commitment is to ensure the safety of our roads for everyone,” Rokosawa stated. He reinforced that the LTA is prepared to take further action against drivers who continue to violate the law and endanger lives.
The strategy employed by the LTA isn’t only punitive; it is part of an overarching initiative to save lives and decrease the number of traffic-related incidents. By holding offenders accountable and removing dangerous drivers from the roads, the Authority aims to foster a culture of responsibility among all drivers.
