Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized Fiji’s commitment to advocating for a just and timely transition from fossil fuels as an essential component of the climate justice movement. During a press conference at the Conference of Parties 29, he highlighted the need for a solid financial strategy to assist all nations in moving away from fossil fuels.

Professor Prasad pointed out that Pacific Island nations are disproportionately affected by climate change, facing rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and disrupted ecosystems that jeopardize their homes, health, and livelihoods. He stressed that these nations have been passionate advocates for climate justice, playing a pivotal role in promoting the 1.5 degrees Celsius temperature target and achieving significant victories regarding loss and damage at various international fora.

He asserted that the time for action is critical, calling for enhanced urgency, focus, and solidarity. He noted that the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty will be a crucial part of this collective response.

In summary, Fiji, led by Professor Prasad, continues to champion the cause of climate justice, advocating for necessary financial commitments to support nations in the shift away from fossil fuels. With their proactive advocacy, Pacific Island nations are setting an inspiring example for global climate action.

This ongoing commitment by Fiji and Pacific Island nations offers hope that broader international cooperation can pave the way for a sustainable and equitable climate future for all.
