The University of Fiji is embarking on an exciting and transformative journey toward 2025, with a notable focus on providing distinctive iTaukei academic programs. The institution aims to uplift and honor iTaukei culture through its Centre for iTaukei Studies (CIS), the only specialized center of its kind in the country.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem expressed the center’s mission to ensure that indigenous knowledge is integral to the university’s academic environment. “Our Centre for iTaukei Studies is unique because it’s the only one in Fiji. We’re the only university that offers a dedicated center specifically for iTaukei studies, which covers various aspects such as culture, language, performance, art, and craft,” she stated.

Adding to its innovative approach, the university plans to extend the center’s educational reach to Levuka, where traditional chiefs will be appointed as adjunct professors. Professor Shameem highlighted the importance of this initiative, noting that it will provide the local community with the opportunity to learn directly from their elders about essential cultural and historical elements.

The University of Fiji is also making commendable advancements in the fields of science and technology, with a focus on contemporary areas such as robotics, artificial intelligence, and blockchain. Professor Shameem emphasized the necessity of understanding these advanced concepts, including their benefits and limitations within society.

Through these initiatives, the university aims to ensure that all aspects of its developments in 2025 will be groundbreaking and distinct from other institutions. Professor Shameem stressed that being prepared for the future requires the University of Fiji to lead in innovation and education.

The University of Fiji’s forward-thinking vision for 2025 emphasizes the blend of cultural preservation and technological advancement, positioning itself as a pioneer in higher education both in Fiji and internationally.

In summary, the University of Fiji is not only committed to preserving the rich iTaukei culture but is also focusing on preparing its students for the future with cutting-edge educational programs in science and technology. This dual emphasis ensures a holistic educational experience that respects traditional values while embracing modern advancements.
