Fiji’s bodybuilding team triumphed at the Oceania Championships hosted in Australia, securing the Best Team Trophy in a remarkable debut international competition. Competing against 10 other nations, the five-member team performed admirably at the Brighton-Le-Sands Hotel in Sydney, marking a significant milestone for Fiji’s presence in the Oceania region.

The event, which took place on August 3, 1990, not only represented a historical achievement for Fiji bodybuilding but also propelled the country to newfound recognition in the sport. Team manager Patrick Fong expressed his pride in the athletes, highlighting their victory as a turning point for bodybuilding in Fiji. Fong’s determination and support played a crucial role in the team’s successful journey, which also left Fiji hopeful about hosting future Oceania competitions.

The team included competitors Aporosa Bogi, Tumeli Navutovuto, Iliesa Sitifano Ivara, former Mr. Fiji Petueli Atalifo, and John Goulding, who contributed their skills and experience to the podium finishes. Despite their relative inexperience on the international stage, the Fiji team showcased a unique posing routine and a strong balance that allowed them to outshine more established teams from Australia and New Zealand.

In individual events, Goulding just missed a podium finish in the 80kg category, while Bogi, Atalifo, Navutovuto, and Ivara also secured respectable placements among seasoned competitors. Fong noted the impressive results were achieved with only a month of preparation, emphasizing the athletes’ remarkable effort against a field of around 70 experienced bodybuilders.

This success not only reflects the current state of bodybuilding in Fiji but also fosters hope for the sport’s future. With growing momentum and recognition, Fiji stands poised to enhance its participation and influence in international bodybuilding competitions.

In summary, the positive outcome at the Oceania Championships paves the way for more opportunities for Fiji’s athletes, with aspirations for continued growth and success in the global bodybuilding arena.
