The Fijian government is making significant strides toward enhancing its presence in the blue economy, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica. In a recent roundtable discussion with representatives from the Waitt Foundation, Kamikamica emphasized the government’s commitment to leveraging the blue economy to promote economic diversification, with a specific focus on commercial aquaculture.

Kamikamica outlined the necessity of creating an economic framework that connects conservation efforts with tangible benefits for rural communities. This approach aims not only to foster innovation in aquaculture but also to establish a sustainable model that can benefit various sectors within Fiji. “The partnership with the Waitt Foundation is crucial in unlocking new opportunities for Fiji’s economy,” he stated, pointing out that collaboration will be key in driving this initiative forward.

The Deputy Prime Minister acknowledged the collaborative efforts of several ministries, including the Ministry of Fisheries and the Ministry of Housing, which he noted are essential to advancing the blue economy agenda. This aligns with previous efforts highlighted by the Ministry of Fisheries and Forestry, which has initiated policies aimed at sustainable aquaculture practices that also enhance food security.

These initiatives reflect Fiji’s broader goals of economic growth and sustainability, demonstrating a hopeful trajectory for the country. As Fiji continues to navigate the complexities of environmental and economic challenges, the focus on the blue economy presents a promising avenue for diversification and sustainable development.

With strong leadership and collaborative partnerships, Fiji is poised to not only protect its marine ecosystems but also to transform them into engines of economic progress for future generations.
