Fiji’s Birthing Revolution: A New Era of Care at PSH Hospitals

Pacific Specialist Healthcare’s birthing facility in Nadi is celebrating a remarkable success rate among its patients. The hospital encourages expectant parents to explore the positive reviews and testimonials shared by new mothers and fathers on social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok, showcasing their joy following the arrival of their newborns.

The PSH Obstetrics and Gynaecology facility is led by Dr. Tui Taoi, who is regarded as Fiji’s top obstetrician and gynaecologist. The birthing team consists solely of female nurses and nursing assistants, ensuring an optimal level of privacy for expectant mothers.

PSH’s director and CEO, Parvish Kumar, noted that the all-female staff has received praise from many expectant mothers and their partners. “These mothers thank us for doing this,” Kumar remarked, adding that after childbirth, mothers are accommodated in private rooms equipped with a television, lounge seating, and beverage-making facilities. He stated that the rooms are designed to offer a five-star hotel experience.

Fathers are welcomed to remain with their partners in the hospital, and the facility encourages this practice.

Kumar also expressed satisfaction with PSH Hospitals’ recent decision to operate the Nadi branch 24/7, as they have observed a steady increase in patients seeking medical attention, especially during nighttime. Last week, numerous patients arriving from the airport required urgent care for issues such as asthma, food poisoning, fever, and sudden abdominal pain. The consultancy fee of $11.50 has been instrumental in providing accessible healthcare to the public, with efforts underway to potentially offer this service at no cost.

Foreign companies have approached PSH to collaborate in making healthcare services free for those in need. Kumar emphasized that PSH’s mission is to enhance health services, promote universal health coverage, and address societal challenges in accessing healthcare.

He highlighted the hospital’s commitment to providing free services to numerous patients and reducing the burden on the public system by offering advanced, timely treatment options. “PSH Hospitals is a different breed of hospital; come talk to us and you will realize that empathy is at the heart of PSH Hospitals,” he said.

Patients visiting general practitioners are charged only $11.50, regardless of whether it’s during regular business hours or in an emergency. Kumar stated that medical procedures are available at competitive rates, with various options for those unable to pay upfront. He mentioned the availability of installment plans for major procedures, with the understanding that patients must meet their financial commitments.
