Excitement is building as the Southern Billiards and Snooker Association of Fiji prepares for its upcoming Billiards Championship, scheduled for next month. The event aims to promote and develop the sports of billiards and snooker within Fiji, with Southern division president David Shiu Ratnam highlighting the importance of leveraging local talent and encouraging youths to pursue positive pathways rather than getting involved in negative influences.

Ratnam pointed out, “We want to build the sport of billiards and snooker in the country. There is a lot of talent out there, and using it in a constructive way is something great.” The association is motivated to grow the sport’s popularity after successfully hosting their 2nd National Ranking Snooker Tournament, which marked a significant step in their mission.

With a clear focus on youth engagement, Ratnam explained that the championship will provide young players with an opportunity not only to compete but also to earn rewards that could support their families. He emphasized the mental and physical fitness benefits associated with participating in billiards and snooker, advocating for these sports as a positive influence in community life.

The engagement with local talent aligns with a broader trend observed in previous tournaments, where participation levels have significantly risen. For instance, the recent 2nd National Ranking Snooker Tournament attracted approximately 60 competitors, creating an environment ripe for discovering and nurturing new talent.

Ratnam invited anyone interested in joining the sport to participate, suggesting that the upcoming championship serves as an excellent platform to connect with the growing billiards and snooker community in Fiji. The association’s ongoing efforts indicate a promising future for the sport, suggesting that more youths will be welcomed into the fold, further enriching Fiji’s sporting landscape.

As the anticipation builds around the championship, the commitment to fostering a supportive and positive environment for young players symbolizes hope and growth for billiards and snooker in Fiji.
