Marist Brother Fergus Garrett is set to celebrate his 90th birthday on Sunday, August 11, 2024, making him potentially the oldest school teacher in Fiji. He continues to share his knowledge at Corpus Christi College in Suva.
Originally from New Zealand, Fergus became a Fijian citizen after arriving in Fiji in 1970 as a Marist Brother. Over the years, he has taught in various schools across the country.
To commemorate his milestone birthday, the Marist family gathered at the Marist Brothers home located within St. Marcellin Primary School. Reflecting on his past, Fergus recalled his arrival in Fiji coinciding with the country’s independence celebrations, where he was present at Albert Park.
“I came to Fiji in 1970 during the independence celebrations,” he stated. “At that time, the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara served as chief minister, and I was assigned to teach at Marist Brothers High School, where I spent several years.”
Throughout his extensive teaching career, Fergus has educated numerous students who have gone on to become prominent national leaders, including former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.
An interview with Brother Fergus and highlights from his birthday celebration will be featured on Fiji Times’ Facebook page this Thursday.
