The Ministry of Agriculture is collaborating with the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) to enforce urgent control measures following the recent detection of the Fall Armyworm in the country. This invasive pest, known to devastate crops such as maize, rice, and various vegetables, has raised significant alarm among agricultural authorities.

In response to the pest’s incursion, intensive efforts have been made to suppress its population and hinder its spread. The Ministry emphasizes the high priority status of this situation, deploying resources including staff and vehicles to support BAF’s efforts.

Dr. Shalendra Prasad, the Ministry’s Director of Research, has outlined the ongoing initiatives, which include extensive surveys and awareness programs for farmers. These efforts aim to educate them about the pest and its potential damage to their crops. Dr. Prasad encourages maize farmers to report any sightings of the Fall Armyworm promptly, allowing for the implementation of appropriate control measures.

Farmers in affected regions are being urged to stay vigilant and to communicate any signs of infestation to local authorities. This collective effort is crucial, especially given that the Fall Armyworm is capable of infesting over 80 plant species, posing a severe threat to Fiji’s food supply and agricultural economy.

The proactive measures being taken reflect the resilience and determination of Fiji’s agricultural sector, mirroring previous collaborations by BAF to tackle agricultural threats effectively. Ongoing community engagement and rigorous pest management strategies point to a hopeful outlook as Fiji mobilizes to address this challenge and safeguard food security for its citizens.

This situation highlights the importance of community cooperation and how the combined efforts of the Ministry and BAF serve to protect local farmers’ livelihoods and ensure the sustainability of Fiji’s agriculture in the face of emerging threats.
