Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed deep concerns about the increasing prevalence of fake news in Fiji, labeling it a significant danger to public trust and professional integrity, particularly as the nation approaches the 2026 General Election. He emphasized the damaging nature of such misinformation, stating, “It is a fraud. It is fraud and it’s bad for us to do that,” highlighting the risks it poses to communication and dialogue.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come during a time of heightened scrutiny on social media platforms, where fake news often disguises itself as credible news reporting. The Online Safety Commission has acknowledged Rabuka’s concerns, though they did not provide further details on his stance.

Authorities, including Fiji Police Force Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu, echoed these worries, noting that the spread of fabricated content can lead to greater societal discord and even personal harm. “Social media has changed the way we interact and not for the better always,” Tudravu stated, urging users to distinguish between true information and misleading content before sharing it online.

In connection with these efforts, the Fiji Police Force has initiated an investigation into the spread of misinformation and is proactively referring cases to the Criminal Investigations Department’s Digital Forensics team. This initiative aims to combat the increasing spread of false narratives that have raised alarms over public safety and social harmony.

Both the Prime Minister and the Commissioner of Police’s statements reflect a shared commitment to fostering responsible digital engagement within the community. As Fiji confronts the challenges posed by misinformation, there remains a hopeful outlook that collaborative efforts among leaders and citizens can lead to a more respectful political atmosphere.

By prioritizing accuracy and encouraging the public to engage in thoughtful dialogue, Fiji can enhance social cohesion and strengthen public trust as it navigates the complexities of information sharing in the digital age.
