A man has been sentenced to six months in prison by the Nadi Magistrates Court after he assaulted his wife during a dispute over noise stemming from his drinking. The incident, which involved the use of a shifter as a weapon, occurred on May 24, 2025, in Namotomoto, Nadi. The man attacked his wife when she attempted to take a speaker to minimize the noise from his drinking session.

Medical evidence presented in court confirmed that the victim sustained a hematoma, swelling, and abrasions on her leg. In a ruling delivered on July 9, Magistrate Talei Kean emphasized the seriousness of the offenses and noted aggravating factors, including the nature of the domestic violence, the use of a weapon, and the husband’s intoxication. Although a starting sentence of seven months was initially considered, it was reduced to six months due to an early guilty plea — one month of which is to be served immediately, with the remaining five months suspended for five years.

This case highlights ongoing concerns about domestic violence in Fiji, mirroring other recent judicial actions aimed at addressing such issues. For instance, a man in Lautoka received a 20-month sentence for assaulting his wife, an act that occurred during a heated argument. Similarly, prior cases have brought attention to the need for protective measures for victims and accountability for perpetrators, underscoring the judicial commitment to tackling domestic violence seriously.

Through these actions, there is hope for a greater awareness of domestic violence and a push toward stronger support systems for survivors, ultimately fostering a safer environment for victims and families in Fiji. The judicial response not only reinforces the importance of holding offenders accountable but also illustrates a collective effort to combat domestic abuse effectively.
